A story with the same concept found in a favorite children's song--" . . . and the green grass grew all around, all around"--without the musical repetition. A small, shiny yellow button takes its place in the pocket of a blue dress, worn by a young girl reclining on an old brown couch, in a small white house. The concept of scale is simply depicted as young listeners move step by step from the lowly button to the great universe beyond Earth. The spare pastel illustrations have the same handsome, painterly quality found in Pedersen's The Tiny Patient (Knopf, 1988). The sophistication of the drawings will appeal to adult readers, but a few of the simple stylized views may be difficult for young children to unravel. The lean text flows smoothly from page to page and, in the tradition of Goodnight Moon , makes it a good bedtime book to share with small listeners. --Virginia E.
