The action moves to Vienna when Salka is forced into marriage with Leon Salaman, son of a wealthy Viennese banker. When Leon begins neglecting his duties at the bank, his father, the formidable Sandor Salaman, starts to rely on Salka's quick business mind. All the conventions of the family saga are present in The Russian Bride . Salka, young and Jewish, is sent from Russia by her self-sacrificing parents to save her from plague and pogrom. Life as a poor relation in a wealthy Hamburg family galls her, as does the rigidly defined role of women. A chance encounter leads to marriage with a wealthy Viennese banker, but the marriage is fatally flawed. Her husband, a confirmed philanderer, only loves Salka when he thinks she doesn't love him. Salka's relief is provided by her father-in-law, who notices her business acumen and brings her into the family business. Though written to a formula, Salka makes a credible, sympathetic heroine; the background of turn-of-the-century Vienna is intriguing.
