From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 1-- Lee Anna discovers a little hedgehog in the meadow and decides to take him home as a special pet. He tries to gnaw his way out of the cage and will not eat. Lee Anna is worried, but does not want to hear her mother's advice--to set the little creature free because he is unhappy. It is only after her grandfather tells her the story of a little girl who was taken home by a hedgehog that she understands the confusion and fright of her new pet. It is a bittersweet moment when Lee Anna releases the hedgehog onto the meadow, but she believes that he will be happy once again. True cohesion between text and illustration is evident in this satisfying book. The storyline moves smoothly and with enough intrigue and empathy to capture a child's interest immediately. Illustrations of action and emotion of both human and animal characters are portrayed through detailed pen-and-ink drawings which are executed in soft, earth-tone watercolors. All complement the mood of the text throughout. A warm, inviting book for story time, and a fine starter for a possible ecology discussion with the very young. --Mary Lou Budd, Milford South Elementary School, Ohio
