Although its headquarters and main workshops were located in England - at Oswestry in Shropshire - there was perhaps no railway company more Welsh than the Cambrian. This was a consequence of the region it served - a vast stretch of mainly rural land between the Welsh Marches and the Irish Sea as far as Aberystwyth and Pwllheli and also the result of the fact that, even after the Grouping in 1923 and Nationalisation in 1948, it still managed to retain a distinct identity. This identity is one factor in its continuing popularity amongst railway enthusiasts. Another is the fact that it controlled two of the country's surviving narrow gauge railways - the Vale of Rheidol and the Welshpool & Llanfair - and that, even today, much of its main line survives to provide an essential link between the numerous scattered communities that it serves. In the third of the new and well-received Ian Allan Publishing 'British Railway Pictorial' series, noted historian of the Cambrian Rex Christiansen provides a pictorial record of the Cambrian Railways' lines during the latter half of the 20th century. Drawing upon the collections of numerous photographers, as well as his own intimate knowledge of the system, he illustrates the changing face of the main line and branches over these years, with the gradual transition from steam to diesel, the threat - ultimately realised - to the future of many of the lines, the gradual rationalisation of the infrastructure, the nature of the traffic carried and the gradual rise of preservation. Having co-authored the definitive two-volume history of the Cambrian Railways published by David & Charles and having written widely on the subject over many years, there can be no one better suited for the compilation of this book than Rex Christiansen.
