Geoffrey Lewis is blessed with good looks and a keen business sense. His wife, Althea, is the perfect hostess, and they live in a gorgeous manor house that he acquired for a song. Althea, who was in thrall of Geoff when she left her husband to marry the younger man, has started to regret her decision. Her only friends are her old school chums, Cressida the artist and Phoebe the actress. Too ill to attend the festival Geoff and Althea organize every summer on the grounds of their estate in the English countryside, Phoebe arranges for a fortune-teller. Althea is pleased, but Geoff is not happy when the woman baits him by saying that something terrible will occur. After two near-death experiences, he becomes obsessed with this grim fortune.
