About the Author:

I was born on July 12, 1925, in Thomaston, Georgia, the eldest of two children of Walter H. and Elnora H. Collins. My sister, Eleanor C. Rachel, is a resident of Tennessee. My parents were both educators. My father was the principal of Fellowship Elementary School, where my mother also taught. Both are deceased.

My immediate family includes my wife, Rosaland Wyatt Collins, a retired social worker; our daughter, Rasheeda Abdur Rahman; and her twin sons, Jamil and Idries.

My elementary and secondary training were completed in Thomaston, Georgia. I completed my undergraduate work at Fort Valley State College in 1946, where I received a bachelor of arts degree in chemistry and pre-medicine, and my graduate work was completed in Atlanta University, Atlanta, Georgia, in 1948.

My employment history included a position as head of the toxicology laboratory for mice at Goldblatt Cancer Research at the University of Chicago in Illinois, where Dr. Charles Huggins, Nobel Laureate (deceased) was director of the program. Dr. Harold Urey, Nobel Laureate (deceased), head of the chemistry research program at the University of Chicago, was helpful in guiding my research abilities.

I resigned from this position in 1955 to accept a position as a chemist at Lever Brother Company in Hammond, Indiana, and later became head of the Department of Standard Solutions for Research and Development. I retired from Lever Brothers in 1988 and founded Collins Pharmaceutical, Inc., and I am the first African American to accomplish this feat. I have two patents for the treatment of herpes and AIDS.

I was honored three times in 1998 by Who's Who of Midwest, America and Sciences. I have also been included in Who's Who of American Inventors Worldwide and Who's Who of 2000 Outstanding Scientists of the 20th Century awards. In addition I was accepted as a deputy director general of the IBC (International Biographical Centre) of Cambridge, England. I am one of five hundred of the original candidates to be enlisted in the World Who's Who Hall of Fame.
