Description from back cover: Between World Wars I and II, heavy good vehicles were completely transformed. They had, by 1919, more or less won the battle for supremacy with the horse and traction engine, and yet were little faster or more reliable, and certainly no less uncomfortable. In this book Nick Baldwin examines the features that changed heavy goods vehicles, of more than 3 tons, in style and speed, and made them comparable with the giants of today. The text is fully illustrated y photographs that are picked to show the history of heavy vehicle design over two of its most important decades using examples of many of the hundred or so makes that came and went in Britain during the period. The book covers the changeover from oil to electric lighting; the adoption of windscreens and then enclosed cabs; the end of solid tyres and the steam engine; and, most important of all, the arrival of the diesel engine, which was soon to put road transport on an equal footing with its great rival, the railways.
