PreSchool-Grade 2-- This simple story about a young boy making discoveries near his home has, perhaps, lost something in the translation. Although Peter's actions, thoughts, and observations seem childlike, the text is often stiff, and the ending is abrupt. As he walks through woods and meadow, Peter talks to a fish in the creek, a dragonfly, an owl, an oak tree, and a cow. Muller's paintings of nature are pleasing to the eye, especially his small vignette on each page of text, showing an individual plant, animal, or insect. The boy, however, often appears cardboard and awkward. The book lacks the excitement and creativity of Joanne Ryder's picture book series on various creatures i.e., The Snail's Spell , (Puffin, 1988); compared with the quiet poetry of Yolen's Owl Moon (Philomel, 1987), Michel's text seems quite mundane. --Susan Scheps, Shaker Heights Public Library, OH
