From the Author:
This manual was meant to be used as a reference text for persons enrolled in or certified by the Grof Transpersonal Training. Holotropic Breathwork™ is a trademarked breathwork technique. The trademarked name can only be used by those authorized to use it by the Grof Transpersonal Training.

Practicing Holotropic Breathwork requires comprehensive training. Participation in Breathwork is wisely done only with the facilitation of someone who has been trained and certified to provide a safe container for deep experiential work. Any number of processes and a wide range of content can emerge during these non-ordinary states of consciousness and skillful and experienced facilitation is crucial. This is no different from other specialized therapies and approaches (Freudian, Jungian, Reichian, etc.). There are many books discussing such approaches, but it is understood that actually practicing them requires training.

I wrote this manual in 1991 when I had been certified as a Holotropic Breathwork facilitator for only one year. My understanding of and respect for the structure of this deceptively simiple technique has grown ever stronger over the more than a decade in which I have facilitated Holotropic Breathwork workshops. The elements of the workshop insure the best possible conditions for safe and fruitful expeditions into the psyche, but only if a key element of the structure is retained, and that is that facilitation is provided by certified facilitators who have explored their own psyches, participated in many Holotropic Breathwork group sessions, and studied the subjects in the extensive curriculum of the Grof Transpersonal Training.
