A Place Called Aullwood inspires and delights readers about the evolution of a wornout Dayton, Ohio farm along the Stillwater River into a famous informal country garden, and an important Midwest nature center and children's farm, born of the dream of a devoted couple, John and Marie Aull. Hence, the name Aullwood.

Published on the occasion of Marie Aull's 100th birtday in 1997, it portrays the story of her and her husband John Aull's Aullwood in a 64-page coffee-table book of photographs and text. The photos come from a vast collection of nature slides by the late Allan L. Horvath, PhD, APSA, photographer and geologist. The text is by Paul E. Knoop, Jr., former director of the Aullwood Audubon Center.

Includes 59 colors photos (4 of which are double- page), 3 black and white photos and 2 maps. A free-standing 9 x 11-inch companion map shows the path of Wiles Creek, the trails, habitat and other areas of Aullwood in detail.

Master photographer Allan Horvath's earlier popular photo essay, The Hills of Hocking, (1986) focused on the massive and rugged beauty of the 10,000-acre Hocking Hills region in southeastern Ohio. In this photo essay, A Place Called Aullwood,Horvath's lens captures the gentle beauty of the enchanting country garden, and the outstanding nature center and children's farm, which today bear the name Aullwood, near Dayton, Ohio in southwestern Ohio.

Like the Hocking Hills region earlier, Aullwood was a favorite haunt of photographer/geologist Horvath. A friend of Marie Aull, he was a frequent visitor to Aullwood in his last years.

Naturalist Paul Knoop, Jr. used to hike in the woods near Aullwood as a boy and worked at Aullwood over 35 years. Now a resident of Hocking Hills, he remains one of the leading naturalists in the

Midwest.

Knoop helped transform the wornout farmland into an environmental education center in 1957, came on

board as a teacher-naturalist in 1959, and later

was center director and education director, retiring in 1994. Knoop and Horvath often ran into each other at Aullwood and shared common values and interests.

Knoop is a good friend of Marie Aull, and was uniquely qualified to write the text which recounts the vision of the Aulls and the evolution of their homestead into the two separate Aullwood Garden, and Aullwood Audubon Center and Farm, of today.

(Paul E. Knoop, Jr.) A lot of my philosophy of life was formed at Aullwood. That place is a part of my whole being. I really miss it and I continually think about it. Marie Aull is the most incredible person I have ever met. She helped create our park district, she was involved in the garden club movement, she did many other things that many people don't know about. But her gift of greenery and foliage and plants and the massed flowers - her love of the land - will always be her legacy. Allan Horvath always had his camera with him at Aullwood. We always stopped and talked for awhile. We really hit it off together because of our common interests. He touched my life by his gentleness, his love for natural objects, his professionalism, and his eagerness to share life with others.
