Excerpt from Life of Captain Stephen Martin, 1666-1740

Sir John's history, and to enlarge only upon such as may be called his own, whereby it will appear how well he merited Sir John's favour as an honest man, a faithful friend, and a brave captain.' This Life of Captain Martin has remained in manuscript until now. It is compiled from the captain's own journals, from 1690 to 1712 inclusive, which. Are still preserved by the family; and it will be found to contain records of events which cannot fail to be interesting to naval readers. Captain Martin was seriously wounded at the battle of Bantry Bay in 1689. He was not at Beachy Head, but was busily engaged in strengthening the Plymouth defences, when the French fleet held the Channel immediately afterwards, and he was at the siege of Cork. He was at the battle of La Hogue, and was actively engaged in the boat work, of which he gives a capital account. He performed a good deal of difficult service with credit during Rooke's abortive attack on Cadiz, and also took part in the battle of Vigo Bay. At the battle of Malaga, where he was in the van led by his brother-in-law, he relates several stirring incidents, and he was at the capture of Barcelona in 1705, afterwards seeing a great deal of service in the Mediterranean and the North Sea.
