Grade 2-3-Eddie Roe, 12, loves baseball. The year is 1942, and many of the game's greatest players are serving in the armed forces. A telegram arrives with the news that his father, an Army Air Corp pilot, has been wounded on the same day that Eddie receives a letter from him. The reality of war becomes a personal experience for the boy, and he no longer focuses all his attention on baseball. In an emotional ending, he skips a game in order to welcome home his injured father. Full-page, darkly colored illustrations set a somber tone. The characters appear rigid and show little emotion. The text is lengthy, and will not hold the interest of the intended audience. The plot is melodramatic and contrived; the dialogue is stilted. While the subtitle implies that this book is about Memorial Day, there is no mention of it in the story. This book leaves readers cold.
