Mexican-based, Spanish-born documentary photographer Christina de Middel (born 1975) offers 200 drawings of different archival news magazine photographs accompanied by lyrics of Mexican ranchera songs. A pastiche of forms, Cucurrucucú invites us to reexamine the violence concealed beneath accepted codes, whether in photojournalism or folk music.

Condition: Nuevo. 416 pp. En 2014 Cristina de Middel se involucró con el archivo fotográfico del periódico sensacionalista Alerta y empezó a trabajar con la idea de explorar los diferentes lenguajes de la violencia y qué papel desempeñaba la fotografía en todo ese ámbito. Así, tradujo al dibujo 200 fotografías a las que añadió, como si de una tira cómica se tratara, cuadros de diálogo en los personajes con letras de canciones rancheras, que en el nombre del amor y la pasión reivindican acciones y reacciones no siempre tiernas. La combinación de estos tres elementos resultó en una serie a la que se dio forma de libró y que ofrece una invitación a replantearse los contenidos que nos llegan, y a identificar la violencia escondida detrás de códigos asumidos. Se trata de una reflexión necesaria, especialmente en la sociedad en la que vivimos, para reconocer los límites de lo aceptable y tratarlos de manera desvinculada, con el fin de comprender su verdadero impacto.
