Partendo da quel capolavoro indimenticabile che è L'estasi di San Francesco di Caravaggio, primissimo quadro di soggetto religioso dipinto dal grande artista intorno al 1594. Accanto a questo dipinto, come illustrano in modo approfondito le schede critiche contenute nel catalogo, le opere insigni di autori che da Caravaggio hanno tratto esempio: Cigoli, Morazzone, Gentileschi, Strozzi, Saraceni in Italia; Zurbarán e Ribera in Spagna; Le Sueur in Francia.
