The horse has been known to man for a time pre-dating recorded history. Originally hunted for food, later becoming a beast of burden, a method of transportation, an instrument of war, a power source for farm equipment, a swift and exciting runner, and finally a form of pleasure and recreation. The advent of mechanized farm equipment and transportation shifted much of the emphasis on the horse from work, to pleasure. The horse population declined rapidly, reaching its lowest mark by midtwentieth century. No longer a major economic necessity, the horse as a subject of research and scientific study was all but forgotten. Evaluating the nutritional needs of the horse was left largely to the horse owner. Horse owners were faced with the little scientifically accurate information to develop nutritionally balanced rations. An increase in the number of arena, and turf enthusiasts, coupled with the rising popularity of the 'pleasure' horse have created dramatic changes in the picture. The horse industry has become a billion dollar 20th century phenomenon. The horse population is increasing in quantity, and quality at a rapid pace. Suddenly the horse has become an animal too valuable to be ignored. Universities, scientific foundations, and government facilities have begun allocating time and funds to equine research. And, the most neglected field of study, nutrition, has become recognized as a science as well as an art. This book is a response to those conditions. Contents in 26 Chapters: Equine Digestive System, Quality Nutrient Requirements, Quantity Nutrient Requirements, Water, Vitamins, Minerals, Energ and Energy Measurement, Grains Oats and Corn, Other Grains, High Protein Concentrates, Pelleted Feeds, Feed Bag Labels, Drying Curing Storing Processing of Feeds, The Hays, Pasturing Horses, Good Feeding Management, Nutrition and Veterinary Care, Role of the Research Foundation and Laboratory, Lab Analysis to Adequacy, Digestive Disturbances, Internal Parasites, Teeth and Digestion, Feeding Problems Appetite and Psychology, and over 100 pages of Expert Opinions on The Art and Science of Feeding in Q & A format.
