Book First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. xxx+313+[4 ad] pages with photographs, drawings and index. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6") bound in original pictorial wrappers. Edited by Gordon Ball. First edition. Irwin Allen Ginsberg was an American poet of Jewish origin, and one of the leading figures of both the Beat Generation during the 1950s and the counterculture that soon followed. He vigorously opposed militarism, economic materialism and sexual repression and was known as embodying various aspects of this counterculture, such as his views on drugs, hostility to bureaucracy and openness to Eastern religions. He was one of many influential American writers of his time known as the Beat Generation, which included famous writers such as Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs. In Ginsberg's freshman year at Columbia he met fellow undergraduate Lucien Carr, who introduced him to a number of future Beat writers, including Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs, and John Clellon Holmes. They bonded because they saw in one another an excitement about the potential of American youth, a potential that existed outside the strict conformist confines of postWorld War II, McCarthy-era America. Ginsberg and Carr talked excitedly about a "New Vision" (a phrase adapted from Yeats' "A Vision"), for literature and America. Carr also introduced Ginsberg to Neal Cassady, for whom Ginsberg had a long infatuation. (Wikipedia). Condition: Edge wear, corners bumped, age toned pages else a very good.

First Edition. One of the central relationships in the Beat scene was the long-lasting friendship of Allen Ginsberg and Gary Snyder. Ginsberg introduced Snyder to the East Coast Beat writers, including Jack Kerouac, while Snyder himself became the model for the serious poet that Ginsberg so wanted to become. Snyder encouraged Ginsberg to explore the beauty of the West Coast and, even more lastingly, introduced Ginsberg to Buddhism, the subject of so many long letter exchanges between them. Beginning in 1956 and continuing through 1991, the two men exchanged more than 850 letters. Bill Morgan, Ginsberg's biographer and an important editor of his papers, has selected the most significant correspondence from this long friendship. The letters themselves paint the biographical and poetic portraits of two of America's most important--and most fascinating--poets. Robert Hass' insightful introduction discusses the lives of these two major poets and their enriching and moving relationship. An exceptional copy; fine in an equally fine dw. Particularly and surprisingly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and especially sharp-cornered. Literally as new; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 321 pages; Physical desc. : vii, 321 p. , [16] p. Hardcover first edition - First printing. Edited by Juanita Liebermann-Plimpton and Bill Morgan, these journals "cover the most important and formative years of [his] life. During this time. . . he met Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs, both of whom would become lifelong friends and significant literary figures in their own right. He reveals a growing self-awareness about himself, his sexuality and his identity as a poet." Illustrated with black and whte photographs from Ginsberg's private archive. An appendix of over 100 of Ginsberg's earliest poems, includes over 50 previously unpublished. Index. xviii, 523 pp. Fine in fine dust jacket (a new copy.).

LCCN: 86-45104 ; LC: PS3513.I74; Dewey: 811/.54 ; OCLC: 17245175 ; Poems by a modern master. "[Ginsberg's] powerful mixture of Blake, Whitman, Pound, and Williams, to which he added his own volatile, grotesque, and tender humor, has assured him a memorable place in modern poetry."-- Helen Vendler ; "'White Shroud' is a mellow sampler of Ginsberg in his prime, autobiographical poems chronicling his travels, public appearances, emotions, dreams and reading over the last five years. During this time, he visited China, and 10 of the poems describe his experiences there, like his reflections in a hotel room recovering from a cold: 'So I lifted my head from my pillow and Woke / to find I was a sick guest in a vast poor kingdom / A famous visitor honored with a heated room, / medicines, special foods and learned visitors / inquiring when I'd be well enough to lecture my hosts on the musics and poetics of the wealthy / Nation I had come from half way round the world.' Even in dreams, Ginsberg is lucid and communicative, as in the title poem 'White Shroud,' its style reminiscent of the inspired, emotionally complex pile-up of images in 'Kaddish,' Ginsberg's elegy for his mother written a quarter century ago. Here the mood is less terrible, if no less loving, as he describes a recent dream about his mother living as a bag lady in the Bronx, 'saner than I/Laughs and cries/She's still alive.' The tender humor characterizing Ginsberg's best work permeates these poems, yet they are no soft sellout to the upbeat Muzak of Madison Avenue." -- Ann Charters, 1987 ; remains of label faintly visible on front cover ; stamp of the Carter Center in Atlanta on the inside front cover ; much wear to spine ; G. Copertina morbida. Condition: Come nuovo. 61 p. ; 16 x 12 cm. I miti. Poesia.
