First Edition
Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First American Edition. 8vo. Pp. vi, [2], 3-185, [1]. Translated by Sylvia Beach. Preface by Michaux for this edition. Bound in salmon-colored cloth with brown lettering stamped on spine. Front free endpaper with old crimps, now mellowed. In the illustrated dust jacket, spine with slight chips and light fading; price of $2.50 intact on front flap. A travelogue of sorts, with Michaux's keen insight informing original observations of the peoples and cultures in India, Nepal, China, Japan, Ceylon, Malaysia, etc., often in simple aphorisms. The uncredited dust jacket design presenting a pattern of rice paper is spare, a la Alvin Lustig, and coincides with his work for the publishers at that time. Despite conjecture, the dust jacket lacks credit and is not cited in the Lustig literature. Dust jacket is now housed in a removable, clear archival sleeve. .
