The Journalism of William Makepeace Thackeray Edited by Margaret Forster. Illustrated by William Makepeace Thackeray. The Folio Society, London. 1984 First Edition 280pp Illustrated Fine Binding. This copy is in mint condition unmarked, bright, white tight and square. Bound in tan linen covered boards with brown illustrations by the author / artist and gilt titling to the spine. The book is contained in a fine robust tan paper covered slip case. William Makepeace Thackeray (18 July 1811 24 December 1863) was an English novelist of the 19th century. He was famous for his satirical works, particularly Vanity Fair, a panoramic portrait of English society. This is the sort of book that the Folio Society does well. Margaret Forster, one or our finest authors was commissioned to edit this selection of some of the finest examples of journalism by Thackeray and illustrated by his own pen and ink drawings. In addition to a twenty four page introduction Margaret Forster has introduced many of the selected pieces with biographical notes. (Forster wrote a biography of Thackeray in 1978) Ref T5 Size: 280pp.

1979. (Hardcover) Very good in very good dust jacket. 391pp. Illustrated endpapers, illustrations. The dust jacket is price-clipped and lightly edgeworn. "William Makepeace Thackeray was once so disgusted by an unduly fulsome biography he was reading that he threw away the volume and said to his daughters, 'Let there be non of this when I go.' They saw to it that there was not. Yet what an autobiography this most witty and self-aware of Victorians could have written if he had chosen. Regretting that he had not, Margaret Forster decided, after reading every word he had ever written, she would let Thackeray speak for himself". Illustrations by William Makepeace Thackeray. (Fiction, Autobiography, Biography, Historical Fiction).
