Hardback. Condition: Mint. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. J M W Turner (illustrator). First Edition. TURNER'S ENGLAND 1810-38 Eric Shanes. Cassell & Co, London. 1990 First edition 288pp Illustrated hardback. This copy is in mint unmarked condition in a fine unclipped dust wrapper. On the evidence of his watercolours alone, Turner can be judged as a prodigiously gifted and original artist. This book brings together all of the traceable watercolours of scenery in England (and a small number of subjects in Wales) that Turner made between 1810 and 1836 specifically for engraving in 11 series of topographical views. In addition, it includes several drawings that were made after 1810 which Turner subsequently allowed to be engraved at a later date. With a preface, substantial introduction, colour reproductions of 227 of the watercolours and of 31 monochrome reproductions of the engravings when no photograph of the watercolour is available. Each illustration is accompanied by a commentary. There are also notes and an introduction and commentaries and an index of titles and subjects.Overseas customers should note that this beautiful book weighs almost 2 Kilos so international postal rates will need to be quoted. Hardback. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. J. M. W. Turner (illustrator). First Thus. This fine unmarked copy is bound in brown cloth covered boards with bright gilt titling to the spine, tight, white, bright and square. The unclipped dust wrapper is in fine condition. International postal rates are calculated on a book weighing 1 Kilo, in cases where the book weighs less then postage will be reduced accordingly. Where the book weighs more than 1 Kilo increased charges will be quoted. This book prints, in one collection, the topographical paintings (technically, watercolour "drawings") of scenes in England and Wales which Turner produced with the intention of having them engraved and published. All of which sounds rather dull; but the paintings themselves sing off the page at you! High-quality reproduction on matt paper gives you a real feeling of the originals, many of which are no bigger in the flesh than seen here. The colours are fresh and vibrant, the graininess, bold brushstrokes and flow of washes which are Turner's trademarks are all clearly seen. Ref EEE1.

Hardcover. Condition: gut. 2001.
