Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Jacket by John Craxton (illustrator). Book Club Edition. First published by John Murray in 1977, this is a Book Club edition of 1987. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of fab bright jacket by John Craxton and spine, top corners slightly rubbed and bruised, not price clipped (no published price), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy, looks almost unread. 291pp. Sir Patrick Michael Leigh Fermor, DSO, OBE (1915- 2011), also known as Paddy Fermor, was a British author, scholar and soldier who played a prominent role behind the lines in the Cretan resistance during the Second World War. At the age of 18, Paddy decided to walk the length of Europe, from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople. He set off in December 1933, shortly after Hitler had come to power in Germany, with a few clothes, several letters of introduction, the Oxford Book of English Verse and a volume of Horace's Odes. He slept in barns and shepherds' huts, but also was invited by landed gentry and aristocracy into the country houses of Central Europe. He experienced hospitality in many monasteries along the way. He finally arrived in Constantinople in January 1935. Patrick Leigh Fermor was widely regarded as 'Britain's greatest living travel writer' during his lifetime, A BBC journalist once described him as 'a cross between Indiana Jones, James Bond and Graham Greene.' During the war, working for SOE, he achieved lasting fame for his kidnapping, with Stanley Moss, of Nazi General Heinrich Kreipe on Crete.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. This hardback was published by Readers Union in Devon in 1978. Despite being a Book Club edition, it has the same text and pagination as the original John Murray First Edition which was published the year before in 1977. The three obvious differences between this edition and the original are: the absence of the two page map; having a similar but not identical dust-jacket design and omitting the frontispiece photograph of the author. This book is one of the most praised and valued travel books in English literature. It is factually based in that golden era of Europe just before the Second World War erased much of the society and history that Leigh Fermor so well describes. The condition of the book is 'Near Fine' subject to some yellowing of the pages of text and two small remnants of an inked price on the top outside corner of the ffep. There are no inscriptions or ownership names etc. The intact dust-jacket is close to being in 'Fine' and has a protective cover. The designer of the original dust-jacket was the great artist John Craxton, who was a close friend of the author. The book is bound with light green cloth on stiff boards. The main text of the book has 291 numbered pages. The double side page map between pages 16 and 17 is in perfect condition. The frontispiece provides a full page black and white photographic plate of the author. The size of the book in inches is 8.8 x 5.6 and it weighs 0.40 kg. As with all our sales of books within the UK, we only ever charge a flat standard delivery cost of £3.35.
