Paperback. Condition: Fine. [48] pages, all illustrations (chiefly colour); 25 cm. Firm binding, clean inside copy. "Napier today is a tourist destination for New Zealanders and overseas visitors, a popular port of call for tourist ships. In 1931 the population of the town was just over 16,000, today the population is over 57,000. It is one of New Zealand's warmest regions on the Pacific Ocean coastline of the East Coast of the North Island. This wooden Victorian town was replaced after the 1931 earthquake and fire with the fashionable architecture vogue of the 1930s, the modern American style of the era which is known today as Art Deco. In February each year Napier hosts an Art Deco weekend with wine, food, jazz, dancing, vintage cars, plane rides and a variety of entertainment, showcasing one of the most outstanding collections of Art Deco buildings in the world. Maori, like Europeans, found the Hawke's Bay a fruit bowl for harvesting and a climate ideal for a good life. Cook passed by in October 1769 and the French visited the bay in 1827. Whalers made Ahuriri a depot and a trading place in the 1830s, and William Colenso founded the Waitangi mission station by the Ngaruroro River near Clive in 1844. The Crown purchased the Ahuriri block including the site of Napier in 1851. Named after Sir Charles Napier, the hero of the Battle of Meeanee, the town became a borough in 1874 and the provincial capital in 1858. The country's oldest winery was established in 1865 at The Mission vineyards at Greenmeadows." - Publisher. Size: 8vo.

Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. Photos, Art, Documents, Drawings Etc (illustrator). Reprint. There was a time when the tramcar was the primary form of public transport for communters in many NZ towns and cities. In this lavishly illustrated history the author charts the rise and demise of these services. In four section he covers the municapilities that introduced trams, in many forms and with varying degress of success, this first section is "All Fares Please", The second, "Monarchs of the Road," examines the influence trams had on the planning and growth of urban centres, the location of important buildings and their community acceptance and appeal, with patronage and track length nationally peaking in the mid-to late 1920's although there was a huge surge in the last two years of WWII when the tramways carried 220 million passengers. Here too is some tachnical information about the trams and systems. The third, "Rust in Peace" follows the end of the tram era, plus some notable events and occasion involving them. The final chapter," Street Tramways of New Zealand 1862-1964" lists the opening and closing dates of horse, steam, cable, battery and electric tramway systems. What is most impressive about this impressive publication is the excellent selection of illustrations. Their profusion enabled text to be condensed, while remaining adequate. Both the first edition and this reprint came off the press in 1985. 112 pages, illustrated throughout in colour and b/w with photos, art, documents, drawings, cartoons, diagrams, map and pictorial e/papers. Brown hard covers with gilt spine titles VG+, ink gift inscription top corner FFEP, text block otherwise excellent. Colour art/pictorial DJ is VG+. A very attractive publication.

Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. A very good clean copy but has an iscription cut from the first page. . The sea may be our highway, but it can charge appallingly high tolls. Our ancestors rightly feared death and destruction at sea. In the last 200 years over 2000 ships have been fatally wrecked on New Zealand shores, sometimes with horrific loss of life. Many more have been salvaged only after epic struggle. In this lively book, leading historian Gavin McLean examines some of New Zealand's most interesting wrecks. In Full Astern he explores some of the iconic wrecks that wrote themselves into New Zealand history: the Orpheus, General Grant, Tararua, Wairarapa, Penguin, Wahine and Mikhail Lermontov. But others will be new to readers, the ordinary, everyday vessels on which New Zealanders depended. Full Astern is a story of terrifying storms, of inhospitable coastlines, of human error, of the malicious hand of fate, and of courtroom dramas as stunned communities picked through the evidence of disaster. It is also testimony to courage, endurance and self-sacrifice such as that displayed by the stewardesses on the Wairarapa who saw to the needs of their passengers with little thought of their own safety. But there is more to wrecks than ships hitting rocks, and in a unique feature, Gavin McLean places maritime risk in its broader context. No dry catalogue of accidents, Full Astern tells how people responded to the challenge of making our coasts safe, a quest that continues in the era of GPS and satellite. More than 300 superb photographs bring alive dramatic days in New Zealand history.
