Book
Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. A highly charged series revealing the absurdities and perversities of intentional racist language"When Pope.L shakes his head he makes drawings that keep him from laugh-crying to death," writes Helen Molesworth of Skin Set Drawings, an ongoing series by multi-disciplinary artist William Pope.L (born 1955). Made with very humble materials, this extended corpus deals with the absurdities and perversities of intentional language, especially racist language and language associated with categorizing and naming color. "Black People Are Taut," "Brown People Are the Green Ray," "Blue People Are What We Do to Homosexuals," "Red People Are From Mars Green People Are From New Jersey," "Purple People Are Reason Bicarbonate," "Red People Are the Niggers of the Canyon" are some examples of this highly-charged series by the self-proclaimed "friendliest black artist in America." Black People Are Cropped offers a selection of drawings from 1997-2011, sketches, critical texts and the artist's own writing. Paperback. Condition: Fine. 1st. [94] pages, chiefly illustrations (some colour); 40 cm. Published on the occasion of the exhibition 'Distorted Faces & Portraits, 1978-2007' at BFAS Blondeau Fine Art Services, Geneva, from May 24 to July 14, 2007. Firm binding, clean inside copy. OVERSIZE! No priority/international, except by arrangement. Richly illustrated with colour plates. "Dedicated to different types of portraits realized by the American artist between the end of the 1970s and today, this publication is presented as a large-format album, with a dust jacket-cum-poster. The format, layout, and mode of printing underlines the graphic talent of the artist, while the gathering of the works juxtaposes the famous "Distorted Faces" series with the hyperreal portraits, symbolic depictions, such as that of Ronald Reagan whose face is literally haunted by figures from the American culture of violence (Charles Manson, Rambo, etc.), and Hollywood subjects." - Publisher. CONTENTS: Distorted faces series: paintings (1986-2007); Noir portraits series (1978); Distorted faces series: works on paper (1978-1985); Sketches for giant face paintings (1992); Other portraits & faces (1993-2006). Size: Folio.

Book
Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This book focuses on Swiss artist John Armleder's (born 1948) early Fluxus-related works with Ecart, a group Armleder cofounded with Patrick Lucchini and Claude Rychner in Geneva in the late 1960s. The Ecart Group published artists' books, presented exhibitions and performances, and opened a bookstore/gallery that is considered to be "one of the most important alternative spaces in Europe in the 1970s" (Ken Friedman). Ecart was particularly important in Europe during the 1970s and 1980s, not only as an independent publishing house, but also because it introduced in Switzerland (and sometimes in Europe) a large number of leading artists of the era, including Joseph Beuys and Andy Warhol. Ecart also worked with artists such as Dick Higgins, Lawrence Weiner, Annette Messager, Daniel Spoerri, Giuseppe Chiari, Maurizio Nannucci and Ben Vautier. This volume is co-published with the Charles H. Scott Gallery, Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design, Vancouver. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
