Trade paperback. A very unusual book, written in a variant of Guernsey English, but one which captures the reader from the very first sentence. Little is known about the author, other than that he was a professor of literature and drama in England, born in 1899 on the Island of Guernsey, and his friends included John Middleton Murray, Frieda and D.H. Lawrence, Tagore and Annie Besant. The manuscript for this book was found among his papers after his death, and is his only known book. It tells the story of a Guernsey man who lived through the Nazi occupation of Britain's Channel Islands into garrulous old age. Introduction by John Fowles. Map, notes on Guernsey English, glossary. xiv, 400 pp. Fine in glossy illustrated wrappers.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Published by Hamish Hamilton, London; 1981. 8vo. 400pp. First edition, first impression. Condition: Fine/Fine. Bound in original burgundy cloth boards with title in gilt to the spine. The binding is square and tight and in excellent condition, with just a touch of bumping to the corners and spine ends. Inside, the book is clean and bright and free from marks or damage, there is just some mild toning and slight spotting to the edges. This beautiful book is housed in its original, first issue, dust jacket. It is vibrant and bright and in very smart condition, with a touch of rubbing to the rear panel and bumping to the spine ends. In all, this is a lovely example of this modern first by G. B. Edwards, with an introduction by John Fowles. The book is a fictionalised autobiography of fisherman and typical Guernseyman, Ebenezer Le Page. Since its publication, this book has been critically acclaimed and praised by critics and authors alike. G. B. Edwards was a Guernseyman himself, and spent many years working on this book. Although it wasn't published until after his death, it is the work that he is best known for. This example would make an ideal addition to any modern firsts collection.
