Original autograph letter signed by the author, actor, Sir John Gielgud, to the sister of actress Lilli Palmer. Gielgud writes: Ò.So very sweet of you to trouble to write about Swansons - I am so delighted to know you enjoyed it. Very worrying about poor Edith - and I am glad to think you are so faithful in keeping in touch with her. I fear there is little one can do. She is an obstinate loner, isnÕt she - but one can admire her determination. Ever yours, John.Ó The letter is written on the verso of a printed notecard which reads: ÒWith the Compliments of Sir John GielgudÓ and comes with the postmarked envelope addressed in GieldgudÕs hand. Both the card and the envelope are in fine condition. The lovely and elegant Lilli Palmer (1914 - 1986) made her stage debut in Berlin in 1932, then, after the Nazi takeover, made her way to Paris to work in the Moulin Rouge. She first appeared in motion pictures in 1935 and in 1945 came to the U.S. with her first husband, actor Rex Harrison (with whom she starred in the 1945 film, The RakeÕs Progress / Notorious Gentleman), where she enjoyed a career in Hollywood and on Broadway before returning to Europe in 1954. Her autobiography, Change the Lobsters and Dance, was met with critical and popular acclaim. Sir John Gielgud (1904 - 2000), a graduate of RADA, made his acting debut at the Old Vic in 1921 and subsequently went on to great critical acclaim as one of the greatest Shakespearean actors of our time. He was nominated for an Oscar for his role in Becket as King Louis VII of France and won Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Dudley MooreÕs butler in Arthur.

They cut my tribute a bit, including ÔCÕest-Lady Parlequi PielÕ - which I thought a pity. It seems she has left the Henley house to be used as a school for students of comedy! Not a very good idea it seems to me. Better to sell the house and found a scholarship at one of the drama schools with the proceeds. I was so very fond of her and of Lilli too. First edition. 2-page introduction by the editor. Octavo. pp [viii], 564. Illustrated.Loosely inserted is an Autograph Letter Signed by John Gielgud and dated Sunday March 28th [1937]: about 150 words on his Finchingfield headed notepaper. He writes to Daisy Drinkwater having heard the news of the death of her husband John: ''He was always charming to me from the first time I ever met him, in 'Robert E. Lee' at the Regent in 1922 when I played my second tiny part, to the time of the Tempest matinée last year when I had the honour to speak his charming verses.''. Gielgud was still a student at RADA when he made his second paid appearance, in Drinkwater's play Robert E. Lee under the direction of Nigel Playfair. Interestingly enough, Gielgud's first radio broadcast was in 1923 with a scene from Robert E. Lee; his last was in 1994. In the present book there are no letters to John Drinkwater.Letters: fine. Book: very near fine in fine dustwrapper.
