His Saturday Club saw Ralph Waldo Emerson, James Russell Lowell, Edwin Percy Whipple, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, John Greenleaf Whittier, and Nathaniel Hawthorne as members, and resulted in the establishment of the Atlantic Monthly.
