[4], XLVIII, 256; [4], 352 pp.Apparently a co-edition with another title-page of the edition Lausanne, J. Pierre Heubach, 1772 (Bodemann, 156.1 who considers this a 'Neuausgabe' of the Coste redaction; cf. also the caption on the frontispiece for vol. 2: 'a Lausanne chez J.P. Heubach'). Pierre Coste (1688-1747) was a Swiss theologian and translator who also edited the Fables of De la Fontaine.Jean de la Fontaine (1621-1695) is one of the most widely read French poets of the 17th century, known above all for his Fables, which provided a model for subsequent fabulists across Europe and numerous alternative versions. After a long period of royal suspicion, he was admitted to the French Academy and his reputation in France has never faded since. His Fables unquestionably represent the peak of La Fontaine's achievement. The first six books, of the "Fables choisies", known as the "premier recueil" (first collection), were published in 1668. The 124 fables were in the main adapted from the classical fabulists Aesop, Babrius and Phaedrus. In these, La Fontaine adhered to the path of his predecessors with some closeness; but in the later collections he allowed himself far more liberty and in the later books there is a wider range of sources. They were followed by five more books (the second recueil) in 1678-79 and a twelfth book in 1694. Between 1682 and 1685 a few fables were published dealing with people in antiquity. These were included in book 12 (in 1694), next to 25 'real' fables.A bit cut short, especially vol. 1 which is a bit smaller than vol. 2, not affecting the text, some staining and slight browning especially in the right margins of vol. 2.l Bodemann, 156.1.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 8vo (205 x 125mm). [xlvii], 534pp., (pp. 521-531, alphabetical index). Engraved portrait frontispiece of La Fontaine by Bertonnier based on portrait by Rigault. Another engraving for La Fontaine's home of Chateau-Thierry, northeast of Paris, signed by Geunepin and Lemaitre and dated 1821. Beautifully produced illustrated edition of the La Fontaine Fables with suite of 60 engraved vignettes by Ransonnette, some signed and dated 1822; all in repeating printed borders animated with wildlife and foliage. 19th-century embossed full red calf by Vincens of Toulouse, detailed with rosettes in central arabesque on covers, single gilt filet frame, flat spine extra embossed with gothic architectural motifs and gilt lettering "LA FONTAINE FABLES," marbled endpapers, gilt edges and turn-ins; (intermittent light stains or foxing mostly at edges and not affecting engravings, which are fine and clear under original tissue guards, original calf with light edgewear but sound copy). 1824 Walckenaer edition of the illustrated classic La Fontaine's Fables in French embossed calf. This edition was prepared by Charles Athanase Walckenaer (1771-1852) and contained the Fables in twelve books, often separated but here together, ending with two tales Philémon et Baucis and Les filles de Minée. The whole is preceded by a "Notice" on La Fontaine by Walckenaer, an "Eloge" of La Fontaine by Sebastien-Roch-Nicolas de Chamfort (1741-1794), a preface and vita of La Fontaine and Aesop. Dedicated to the Dauphin of France, this work was an inestimable gift of French inspiration - polished in language, plenty in genius of wit, and full of moral and philosophical truths. The separate editions of La Fontaine's Fables are too numerous to count, but the successive editions brought out by Walckenaer, who made the life and oeuvres of La Fontaine his own special property, were widely regarded as the best. At least, this edition of the Fables follows a popular edition of 1822 by Nepveu, here revised, and was published the same year as definitive Oeuvres completes of La Fontaine also by Lequien. The great French fabulist is unmatched with such instinctive accuracy of the characteristics of the animal world and Ransonette's illustrations perfectly capture their unique qualities and expressions. In all, Fontaine turned the fables into an admirable account, allegorically recounting the passions, hopes, fears, and weaknesses of man. Good copy of Walckenaer's 1824 illustrated edition in an elegant French embossed calf. In this state it is a charming and rare find. "XXIV" [= XXVIII, pp. XXV-XXVI and XXVII-XXVIII are misbound), 462 pp.Beautifully illustrated edition of the French verse fables of Jean de La Fontaine, loosely based on fables by Aesop, Horace and others and first published in the years 1668-1694 here including a "Précis de la vie de J. de La Fontaine", an abridged version of the biography by Charles Athanase Walckenaer, published in 1820. At the end of the biography, the author states that this edition was especially intended for young people, which is also reflected by the fact that below each fable there are some explanatory notes for children. The beautiful engravings, including that on the title-page were drawn from the magnificent series by Jean Baptiste Oudry (1686-1755) in the 1755-1759 Paris edition of La Fontaine's fables.Binding slightly rubbed, especially around the spine, worn around the edges, corners a little bumped, some stains on the paste-downs and endpapers, pp. XXV-XXVI erroneously bound in between pp. X-XXI even as pp. XXVII-XXVIII which are bound in between pp. XIV-XV. Otherwise in good condition.l Rochambeau 305; cf. Fabula docet 51 (1755-1759 Paris ed.); not in Gumuchian.
