About The Scribe's Perch
December. 2014. You will notice, especially on my pricier books I have slashed my prices. For instance, Mr. Einstein is now only $8,000. After 30+ years as a used bookseller my M.S. has commanded me to retire. I thank you all for your former patronage and wish everyone the best for this holiday season.
My name is Jimmy Weyant. In April of 1984 I opened my first shop in Newport, R.I. Because I also write I named it The Scribe's Perch. It was only 600 square feet but it was a wonderful place.
In the back, behind the stacks was an aviary. If you had children with you I'd invite them - one at a time - to enter the aviary with me. I'd catch a canary and let the child hold it to feel its heartbeat (I forget now, but its a zillion times a minute!). There was also always a cup of tea offered to my customers.
I looked at my job as being the receiver of someone's passion. They had already bored their spouse, their neighbor, their workmates - I was there for them to tell me how to grow the perfect rose, how to make an airplane from scratch, or how to dress for a reenactment. My other job was, if the customer's companion was bored to entertain the bored one while the bibliophile checked out my stock.
I was the first out of print dealer in the country to have an '800' number. I ran a national search by advertising in the Sunday editions of the NY Times, LA Times, Chicago Trib. - there were eight of them. Monday morning was a zoo for my staff of three!
After a few years I began doing rare book auctions. I built that part of the business to where our prices realized were listed in American Book Price Current, the industry standard.
I then lost everything in a divorce. Eight years ago I moved to Florida and after a couple of months here I decided to once again become involved in the buying and selling of old books. I missed the books, I missed the book people. And also, I'm addicted, you see. But unlike most addictions I find old books a lovely one.
My "McDonald's Arches" is the elderly fellow pushing a wheel barrow full of old books. If you see him in a picture, you will know you are looking at a Scribe's Perch book. I am very careful to describe a book with accuracy and will always give a refund if there is any question regarding a book's condition.
I always reserved the last page of the auction catalogs for myself. There I'd write of the goings on of The Scribe's Perch. I'd always close the same way, as I will here. By wishing you "Good bookin', by Golly"!
