Synopsis

Excerpt from Gonta: An Historical Drama, in Five Acts

Gonta (living under the protection of Mladanovicz), a courtier by nature, and gifted with much acuteness of in tellest, contrived to insinuate himself into the good graces of his master, the Palatine Potocki who, highly appreciating the valour and abilities of his vassal, gave him the command of his Cossack troops. He also ameliorated his condition, enabled him to contract an advantageous marriage, and placed him in the proprietary tenure of two villages for a rent almost nominal. Gonta did not at first show himself unworthy of his master's bounty, and appeared to be actuated by a devoted attachment to his benefactor. As he at all times lived in perfect harmony with Mladanovicz, to whom he confided his two sons and as the palatine's high opinion of him was daily increasing, Gonta was entrusted with the command of all the baronial or seignoral troops in the neigh bourhood and was caj oled, humoured, and flattered, as always happens in similar circumstances. Availing himself of all the advantages he enjoyed, he gained extensive in fluence and great consideration in the Ukraine and became the favourite of all the Cossacks, over whose minds he had obtained a powerful ascendancy.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into a pivotal moment in Polish history: the Haidamak rebellion of the 1760s. The author vividly recounts the brutal uprising of Ukrainian peasants, led by the charismatic Gonta and the fanatical Zelezniak, against the Polish nobility. The narrative unfurls against the backdrop of Russiaââ â¢s growing influence in the region, with the Empress Catherine II strategically exploiting religious tensions to further her own agenda. The book explores the complex interplay of political machinations, religious fanaticism, and personal betrayals that fueled this bloody conflict. The author paints a stark portrait of Gonta, a man of cunning and ambition, who is manipulated by the wiles of a Russian priest, Basil. Gontaââ â¢s descent into barbarity is a chilling reminder of the destructive power of religious fervor and the seductive allure of power. The book underscores the fragility of peace and the enduring human capacity for violence in times of upheaval. Through its captivating narrative, this book offers a window into the turbulent history of Eastern Europe and its enduring relevance to understanding the dynamics of power and the fragility of social order.
