This comprehensive volume presents the first full scale study of Francesco Albani, his long and successful career as artist and teacher, and his key contribution to the seventeenth-century Bolognese school of painting. The book includes the artist`s illustrated catalogue raisonn introducing newly discovered paintings, documents, and preparatory drawings, and complete information on each of his 157 works.

This book draws attention to an Italian Baroque artist who is not as well known as some of his 17th-century contemporaries, like Annibale and Augustino Carracci and Guido Reni. Puglisi (art history, Rutgers) stresses Albani's stylistic influencesAespecially the Carraccis, in whose workshop Albani studied and worked, as well as Raphael and TitianAand the classical themes that Albani used in his landscape paintingsAthe Ovid, for example, and the Arcadian pastoral. She also compares his landscapes to those of French Baroque artist Claude Lorrain and explores his reception in the critical literature. Reproductions of Albani's paintings appear in the book in loosely chronological order and are accompanied by provenance listings and a bibliography. Quite disappointingly, however, especially considering the book's high price, all of the plates are reproduced in black and white. Owing to the specialized nature of the subject matter, this book is recommended only for art or academic libraries that support upper-level research in Baroque art.ASandra Rothenberg, Framingham State Coll.
