A Central American fishing village on an island surrounded by sea and jungle is home for a Mayan physician, his North American wife, and their three daughters. Father and children are content with the simple life but Mother yearns for glamour. The story focuses on the youngest child, Octavia, on the verge of puberty and trying to puzzle out the mysteries surrounding sex and adulthood. The summer's catalyzing event is the arrival of Mother's adored twin brother and his fascinating son. Uncle Clo bears a secret which seems dreadful to Octavia, but Mother is resolutely deaf to her fumbling, embarrassed questions. An incestuous relationship, death, and Octavia's realization that her perfect mother, whose attention she craves, is far from perfect after all taint her transition to adulthood. Young Octavia is delightful and very real. Author Arnold draws the reader into her story, capturing what it is like to be a rebellious child confronted, bewildered, and frightened by the adult world. Highly recommended. Literary Guild alternate.
