This long-awaited first American edition of the report of the Argentine National Commission on the Disappeared documents human rights abuses that occurred during military rule in Argentina from 1976 to 1983. The volume relates personal accounts of abduction, torture, and death, and presents chilling descriptions of the systematic organization of state repression of suspected dissidents. Queasy readers might prefer John Simpson and Jana Bennett's less graphic The Disappeared and the Mothers of the Plaza ( LJ 11/15/85), which explores the political context of these horrendous events more completely than can the Commission's report.
