Architecture and Early Homes of St. Joseph - Softcover

9780692004036: Architecture and Early Homes of St. Joseph

Synopsis

St. Joseph, Missouri brims with architectural gems. It rivals Savannah, GA and Charleston, SC. Architecture can provide a dialogue between generations and twenty two featured homes in the Museum Hill Historic District of St. Joseph have a lot to say. The homes' architectural styles are explained in the book, in chronological order through lavish illustrations and brief historical narratives. A box on each page provides a national or local historic event for further contextual understanding. A map is provided on the last page for a walking guide of the neighborhood. And a before picture on page 35 of an historic home before the author restored it shows what neglecting the dialogue looks like. See if you can find the restored home among the twenty-two!

About the Author

Caroline Castor is a sixth generation resident of St. Joseph. Her ancestors were prominent early citizens and built many of the homes and buildings that she writes about. Her father is a real estate developer and involved in historic preservation. Growing up with an appreciation of great buildings and spaces led her to study architecture at the University of Arizona. She then worked in New York City, lived in Mexico City, and Florida but ultimately returned to her roots in St. Joseph where she now lives with her husband and four children in an 1870s family home.

Review

By presenting them in chronological order, Castor brilliantly takes the reader from one of the oldest frame homes built in the year before the Pony Express began through Italianates, Queen Annes, and other fancy grand dames of the Victorian era. --BJ Alderman, Missouri Life Magazine

Here's an example of what the author has done. The description of a Gothic Revival house on Francis Street contains an account of the features of the structure and then the rich architectural details found on the house's front porch. She notes that the invention of a stem-powered, scroll saw is a reason for making the wooden features possible. And the description is topped off with a brief comment on the first homeowner. This introduction is packed into a paragraph that isn't overwhelming. The chapbook provides introductions into the following architectural styles: Carpenter Gothic, Gothic Revival, Italianate, Second Empire, Victorian Eclectic, Queen Anne, Chateauesque, and Romanesque. Using the book a reader could drive around the city and identify the basic architectural style of almost any 19th century St. Joseph homes. --Marshall White, St. Joseph News-Press
