Back in 1753 the British Museum was founded following the bequest of Sir Hans Sloane's own collection of antiquities to the British nation. The inspired idea to bring together a collection of artefacts, paintings, books and curiosities for everybody to enjoy free of charge was `an extraordinary experiment in public education'. This pictorial history of 250 years of the British Museum takes a decade-by-decade look at its expansion and its acquisitions which included the Parthenon sculptures, the Sutton Hoo ship burial, Viking hoards, medieval manuscripts, Wedgwood pottery, Chinese paintings, Egyptian mummies and so much more.

About the Author
Marjorie Caygill is Assistant to the Director of the British Museum. She is the author of a number of books and articles on the history of the Museum and its collections, including the A-Z Companion, Treasures of the British Museum, Building the British Museum (with Christopher Date), The British Museum Reading Room and The Story of the British Museum. She is also coeditor (with John Cherry) of A.W. Franks: Nineteenth-century Collecting and the British Museum.
