Review

Fleet Services: Managing to Redefine Success by Tim King

I have known Mr. Tim King for over 25years.  He had worked for mewhen I was a Manager of a major gas and electric utility fleet.  He is an outstandingleader.  He is a licensed mechanical engineer with a Master's in BusinessManagement.  After I left the fleet business to go into utility operation,Tim became the Fleet manager for our gas and electric company.  He hasexperience in designing vehicles and equipment, fleet management, accountingand life cycle analysis, cost accounting, and labor management.  As I readhis book, it reminded me of the history of his management of a largefleet.  He has had an outstanding and very noteworthy career.  Tim'spassion is, developing and managing successful fleet professionals andorganizations.

I have managed fleet professionals for most of my 30 years in the utilitybusiness.  As an operations vice president of a large utility company, Iwould expect my fleet professionals obtain this book.  It has all of theinformation needed to run a fleet organization.  I have read other bookson this subject, this is the first one that has a keen focus on operations, cost management, leadership and customer service.  I see this book as acollege text for operations management.  It should be required reading forSAE mechanic certification.

This book is an update to the dated information in older books in theindustry.  The time has come, for an updated real-world book that willhelp fleet professionals excel in their profession.  By following theteaching in this book it will create a successful fleet organization.  Thecustomer service, business planning, best practice strategies, use of businesstools, and required leadership teachings in this text will add to any fleetprofessional success in the industry.

The book outline and flow of information is noteworthy.  The sevenparts in the book layout a very comprehensive order to follow. The layout alsoallows the reader to go to individual parts of the book to get information andteachings from specific areas.  As an example, if I wanted information onbusiness planning and direction, I would go to Part III and the information isvery complete and comprehensive.  This area would allow me to create myfleet goals.

I do not see any controversial topics within this text. The onlyadditional items, I would suggest is a study guide and lesson outline for thistext.  This book will be used in the college classroom environment.  The fleet industry needs this book as soon aspossible!
