D.J. ENRIGHT was born in 1920 in the English Midlands, in Leamington Spa, the scene of most of the poems in this book. He studied English literature at Cambridge University and later taught at universities in Egypt, Thailand, Japan, Singapore and Germany and at the University of Birmingham in England. He is the author of a number of books of poetry, notably The Old Adam (1965), Unlawful Assembly (1968) and Daughters of Earth (1972), as well as of four novels and several works of criticism. From 1970 to 1972 he was coeditor of Encounter. At present he is a director and Chief Editor of Chatto & Windus of London.
