The Jesuit State in South America has fascinated philosophers and social historians since the time of Voltaire and Rousseau to the present. At its peak period in the early eighteenth century this Republic, as it came to be called in Europe, covered an area almost the size of Western Europe. In an age of rough justice and quick commercial gains, the Indians in this state had no coinage, no capital punishment and no private property. Their towns had paved streets a century before Buenos Aires or Lima; their churches (now largely in ruins) were comparable in grandeur to the old cathedrals of Europe; their armies provided the finest native levies; their musicians and choristers astonished visitors from Spain; their plantations of South American tea were the finest on the continent; and, their system of communications by road and river were more complex and efficient than anything existing today. Some historians have suggested that this state was inspired by Thomas More's Utopia. Others have seen in it the only example of Christian Communism in practice~or a perfect form of socialism. Philip Caraman suggests that it might have been simply the result of sound government and pragmatic good sense. Seller Inventory # 6222501
