I wrote this book because my patients couldn't find the information they needed to achieve excellent control of their asthma. Their doctors had asked them to come to their office every time they had an asthma problem. I believe that with proper treatment, a well-informed patient will have few asthma episodes and should be able to treat those that do occur at home. To do this, the patient must know how to track his or her symptoms, measure peak flow and know how to respond to changes. My tracking system allows patients to do just that.

The patients I see in consultation have some of the following problems:

They accept and learn to live with asthma symptoms, such as a cough, not realizing that it is a sign their asthma requires more vigorous treatment.

They accommodate to their asthma because they do not understand that it can be controlled. In fact, many patients who see me have been told by their doctors that they do not need a consultation when this obviously is not the case.

Most patients do not use a peak flow meter as a tool to manage their asthma at home. Yet this is the most powerful tool available for guiding treatment.

I believe most parents of children with asthma and most asthma sufferers want to be able to manage their asthma at home. I give them the tools to work with their doctors and manage their asthma at home, so that they can lead normal, active lives.

About the Author

Thomas F. Plaut, M.D., is a nationally recognized asthma specialist and the author of the recently published Asthma Guide for People of All Ages (Pedipress, 1999). His first two books, Children With Asthma: A Manual for Parents; and One Minute Asthma: What You Need to Know, have outsold all other asthma publications. His diaries, used to monitor asthma in children and adults, have won national acclaim.

A graduate of Yale University and Columbia University Medical School, Dr. Plaut practiced pediatrics for twenty-four years in Appalachia, the South Bronx and western Massachusetts before founding Asthma Consultants in 1988. In addition to authoring numerous books and articles, Dr. Plaut devotes his energy to caring for patients and assisting health care organizations in improving their treatment of people with asthma. He also travels the US and abroad, giving lectures to health care professionals and appearing on TV and radio programs for the general public, explaining his approach to asthma treatment.

Dr. Plaut's contributions to asthma care and education have been recognized by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, and the National Association of School Nurses.
