Recreation Programming: Designing and Staging Leisure Experiences is a 480 page text book used in university curricula in parks, recreation, tourism and sport management programs. The 2018 edition is the eighth edition. The book is divided into four sections and includes twenty-two chapters. From the third edition (2000) onward the book has been co-authored by Dr. Barbara E. Schlatter. Primary purchasers of this book are students enrolled in the curricula named above. However, many practitioners report using the book as an important desk reference to completing their job responsibilities. The book is considered a "classic" in the field. Regardless of the titling of your job, if you need to organize and develop recreation, leisure, sport, or events of any kind, the book has information that will help you get this done. The book has been used for over 30 years to inform practitioners with these responsibilities.

This book has been on the market for thirty years through eight editions. When first proposed reviewers recommended that the book not be published as it did not teach recreation programming. It did not teach programming as it was taught at the time. The publisher published the book anyway. It was immediately well received and has become the go to book in the field for learning how to program and as a reference book for professional programmers. Over 26,000 copies have been purchased and the book is used in curricula around the world. My original ideas and concepts about how to design and manage leisure services have been vindicated with the long term success of this book. The book reviews how people experience leisure and uses this knowledge as a base to build a practice for designing immersive, engaging leisure experiences. It is noted that leisure experiences are a unique phenomenon characterized by perceived freedom, intrinsic motivation, and positive affect, i.e. the opportunity to sustain interaction and co-produce the experience. Numerous techniques are included in the book that prepare one for designing and staging leisure programs. Understanding the "situated activity system" in which programs occur, the Framed Experience model of design, and several unique evaluation models are included. How to manage the organizations that provide leisure experiences are also covered. How to strategically plan for the delivery of leisure services, how to price services, and how to staff operations are all included.
Academics and practitioners were asked to provide commentsabout the book to use for promoting the seventh edition, the 25 yearanniversary edition (2015). The commentsprovided below attest to the impact of the book over the quarter century it hasbeen available.

This book is a great foundation text for the recreation, event planning, sports management, tourism, and leisure professions.Programming is at the heart of these professions and where the text has had thegreatest impact. Rossman and Schlatter continue to link best practices totheory, and this strategy allows professionals to demonstrate theory-basedprogramming throughout their careers. It is the most relevant, rigorous, andreadable scholarly text in designing and staging leisure experiences.
