In the first half of the 20th century, Britain's middle class expanded out of recognition and advanced to new levels of prosperity and comfort, as well as influence. For the "lower middles", especially, it was a time of progress and consolidation, despite severe restrictions in educational opportunity. With extensive factual information and previously unpublished illustration, much of it nostalgic to the older reader, the author sets out to portray and examine middle-class lifestyles and characteristics from the Edwardian years to the end of the 1940s. He looks at incomes and expenditure, housing, domestic life, etiquette, the role of women, upbringing of children, behaviour, leisure and entertainment, and political influences and attitudes. Particular attention is given to schools and education, dress and theatre - all of them important in forming and emphasizing class distinctions and attitudes. Ref V 2. Seller Inventory # 026093
