When the Vikings came to England they brought with them the practice of making almanacs or calendars carved on blocks of wood called clogs. For centuries unlettered people used these to keep track of the agricultural seasons and of the Christian seasons and festivals. This booklet describes and explains the symbols that were taken from one such clog almanac and incorporated into the stained-glass windows of St George’s Church, Jesmond in Newcastle upon Tyne. It also explains very briefly the beliefs associated with these symbols.
