Synopsis

The author, Emily Stowell (1916 - 2011), promoted world peace through friendships across borders beginning in World War II, when she taught English to Mexican farm workers sent to Washington state as part of the bracero program. It became her life's mission to bring peace to the world by helping people learn each other's languages and cultures, so they could understand their points of view. With her husband, she founded San Diego's Amity Institute, which continues to offer exchange programs that build international friendship and cultural understanding through teaching exchange, involving thousands of people worldwide. This thoroughly researched historical novel carries particular interest to those with the family name Kuykendalls (Coykendalls, Kirkendales and other spelling variations), Cools, Brinks, Westfalls, Smiths, Swartwouts, Cartwrights, Pings, Sinks, Hoovers, Millers and Tacks. The book follows the lives of their ancestors - Jacob Luyerson and his wife Styntje Douwes - who crossed the Atlantic from Old Amsterdam to the New World in 1645 where their son Leur was baptized in 1650. From the five-month voyage from New Amsterdam, to the seven-month traverse of the Oregon Trail in 1852 a subsequent uprooting of his offspring, they were among the first settlers in Manhattan, Albany, Kingston, the Minisink on the Delaware, the South Branch of the Potomac, Kentucky, Indiana, Wisconsin, Oregon and Washington Territory. This book is peopled by ordinary folk who transcended the heroic times through which they lived. A saga of foresight and frustration, inter-ethnic cooperation and conflict, love and lust, birth and massacre, sorrow and celebration, hardship and healing, American Nomads mirrors the building of a nation through the interwoven strands of this family's tapestry.
