This book is an engaging chronicle of an expedition taken by a group of gentlemen into the rugged and beautiful Allegany Mountains, which are part of the larger Appalachian Mountain range in eastern North America. The author provides a detailed and lively account of their journey, as they travel through stunning scenery teeming with wildlife and explore the area's rich natural resources. Beyond the entertaining travelogue aspects of the book, the author also provides a thoughtful examination of the mountains' place in American history and culture. He explores how they have been perceived and described by different people over time, from Native Americans to European settlers to modern-day tourists and adventurers. Through these diverse perspectives, the book offers a nuanced understanding of the mountains' significance both as a physical landscape and a symbol of the American spirit. The author's insights into the relationship between humans and the natural world are particularly noteworthy. He argues that the mountains have the power to inspire awe and wonder, and that spending time in their presence can help us to connect with our own sense of place and purpose. This book is a valuable contribution to the literature of American exploration and nature writing, and it offers a unique perspective on the enduring fascination with the Allegany Mountains.

West Virginia University English Professor Timothy Sweet edited the second volume in our West Virginia and Appalachia series. The Blackwater Chronicle by Philip Pendleton Kennedy was originally published in 1853, but this wilderness travelogue about the exploration of Canaan Valley has appeal far beyond that time and region. In fact, it was originally published in New York and London, and even in a German edition. This often humorous and always fascinating story, told by Kennedy about the journey he and his colleagues took into yet unexplored territory, will make the reader long for days when there was still wilderness on this continent. It will also be of interest to the outdoorsman and should be viewed as an environmental cautionary tale.
The author, , Philip Pendleton Kennedy (1808 - 1864), spent most of his life in the present-day eastern panhandle of West Virginia, where he socialized, hunted, fished, and dabbled in writing. This is his only major published work.
