China Miéville is the author of KING RAT; PERDIDO STREET STATION winner of the Arthur C. Clarke Award and the British Fantasy Award; THE SCAR, winner of the Locus Award and the British Fantasy Award; IRON COUNCIL winner of the Locus Award and the Arthur C. Clarke Award; LOOKING FOR JAKE a collection of short stories; and UN LUN DUN, his New York Times bestselling book for younger readers. He lives and works in London.
Since the first volume ended, Nelson and Roxie have been putting their superhero-creating dial to good use on enjoyably weird globe-trotting adventures. But with the appearance of a coolly efficient assassin called the Centipede, Mieville cranks the weirdness up impossibly high only to push it even higher by the end of the volume. The Centipede, out to make a deal with the power behind the dial, calls a creature from the central hub of dimensions, and the stakes and the scope open vastly for a surreal showdown that allows dark-fantasy-maestro Mieville to pull out all the stops. He also delivers sympathetic character moments and, as a bonus, a very poignant (and hilarious) take on Batman’s origin. The art, handled by Ponticelli and Green, consistently manages to effectively balance the bizarre and the heroic. Although he employs familiar superhero tropes, Mieville has created a full-blown mythology that began with the first volume and ends here, making an inviting, phantasmagorical prospect for readers not looking to commit to decades of continuity. --Jesse Karp
