Synopsis
Melsham, in Norfolk, 1920. Barbara Bosgrove looks forward to the annual Harvest Supper and Ball. There, George Kennett seeks her out for a dance, having had his eye on her since spotting her punting on the Cam with her friend Penny, and Penny's charming brother Simon. George vows to win Barbara's hand in marriage - a woman of her prestige would raise his prospects considerably. And, despite George's serious manner - unlike Simon with his great sense of fun - Barbara agrees to marry him, believing him to be reliable. But marriage to George, with his constant infidelity and his callous and ruthless business plans, wears Barbara down. Meanwhile Simon, who has always loved her, reawakens Barbara's passion and fighting spirit, but at what cost?

About the Author
Born in Singapore, Mary Nichols has spent most of her life in East Anglia. She has written short stories and articles for a variety of newspapers and magazines, but has turned to writing novels. Mary lives in ELY, Cambridgeshire.
