From School Library Journal:
Grade 6-10-In order to escape a miserable summer with her parents, living in a motel near her father's work, Rachel happily accepts an offer to stay with her aunt and uncle in a small town in Canada. When she arrives, she meets up with Anna, Scott, and Michael. The foursome ride bikes, canoe up the river, and even spy on Rib Bone Squire, the town's hermit. Rachel becomes more attracted to Michael with each passing day. But there is a darker side to him. She learns that it's been two years since his brother Nick was killed in an accident and Michael and his parents can't seem to heal the wounds they all have. The author has captured the beauty of the landscape and intertwines a convincing look at the teens' lives into a quietly understated drama about overcoming grief. The characters are well developed and have a sense of duty and responsibility far beyond their years. The emotional tone throughout this novel is well defined, especially within the framework of Michael, whose deeply controlled guilt and anger over his brother's death unravels in a timely fashion. Readers will see themselves in Rachel, who has a good heart but is powerless to fix the problems she sees. A good read.
