Gordon Poest grew up on a dairy farm in southwestern Michigan where he developed his love and appreciation for animals. After graduating from Michigan State University he taught school for 30 years. During this time, he and his family also raised many different animals including dogs; dairy, pygmy, and angora goats; donkeys; mules, potbellied pigs; chinchillas; hedgehogs; sugar gliders; and reindeer.
Gordon served as a 4-H leader for 30 years with projects in dairy cattle, dairy goats, dog obedience, donkeys and mules. He was instrumental in starting the first 4-H dog obedience project and the first donkey and mule 4-H club in his county. His family raised 13 puppies that became Leader Dogs for the Blind as part of their 4-H project. He served as president of the county 4-H council and was on the state 4-H dog committee.
Gordon taught dog obedience classes for 26 years and is a past member of the National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors. He has also served as both deacon and elder on his church consistory and has taught Sunday School classes.
Gordon and his wife Jean have been raising reindeer for five years and he has been the corresponding secretary for Reindeer Owners and Breeders Association since September'96. They have two married daughters and four grandchildren.
