The author has designed this book to guide librarians "through the successful selection and use of more than 500 resources." Practical tips that should be considered both for purchasing and presenting are included together with development of objectives for using this type of story or folktale. Categories of resources include: scary stories, ghost stories, haunted houses, stories of the supernatural, Halloween stories, monster stories, witches, and funny stories. The notes about censorship concerns and challenges are practical, but may not always resolve the problem. The activity lessons are based on major curriculum areas and include grade level indications, objectives, resources, materials needed, procedures, and some pen-and-pencil exercises. The entries are grouped by format (picture books, I Can Read); within each grouping, arrangement is alphabetical by author, and an icon indicates if the book is also available in audio or video format. Each citation includes bibliographic information, grade level, and two review sources with dates. The book is easy to use, and can be used for both program and collection development. Appendixes include sources for selection policies and subject, title, and author indexes.
