Synopsis
The anthology Understanding Race and Ethnicity in Contemporary Society provides comparative and historical perspectives on race and ethnicity, with a focus on how racial and ethnic relations in the United States, and other parts of the world, came to be.
The text is organized into four sections. The first provides introductory overviews of race. The second explores the development of racial and ethnic patterns. The third section is devoted to understanding these patterns, while in the fourth and final section students learn about key issues in racial and ethnic inequality.
Each section has an original introduction, as does each reading. Study questions are also provided for each selection.
Specific topics include the racialization of poverty, institutionalized racism, Islamaphobia and sexism, and who is identified as white, and why.
Clifford Broman holds a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Dr. Broman is a professor of sociology and the graduate program director at Michigan State University. He is the author of numerous articles on stress and mental health, and racism and discrimination as stressors in the health of African Americans. His most recent publications include "Race Differences in the Use of Mental Health Services Among Young Adults," in Psychological Services, and "Racial and Ethnic Self-Identification Influences on Physical and Mental Health Status Among Blacks," in Race and Social Problems.
