Sixteen-year-old Sydney is overwhelmed by the excitement of the 1914 recruitment campaigns and the bravado of men leaving for the Great War. Bursting with enthusiasm, he runs away to join up, but soon finds himself a long way from home in a frontline trench where reality - and the rats - begin to bite. Told through Sydney's optimistic letters home and his journal, this is his honest portrayal of the disillusionment and degradation of life and death in the trenches of World War I.

When his dad heads off to fight in the Great War in 1914, Sydney, 15, also wants to leave his small town in England and join up. After running away from Ma, he lies about his age and is soon in the trenches. Sydney’s first-person narrative is mainly composed of letters to his family that are excited and hopeful at first (Don’t worry . . . |we’ll be home by Christmas) but soon become scared and depressed, as he speaks about the lice, rats, and mud in the trenches, and then the slaughter he witnesses. At the story’s abrupt end, he prepares to go over the top into the battlefield. In the clear, stirring line-and-watercolor spreads, Sydney looks younger than his years, and the pictures shown from his viewpoint personalize the horrors. A long afterword adds more historical background and reveals that the story is true: the real-life Sydney died during combat in a muddy field in Belgium. A picture book for older readers, this will spark discussion about war past and present. Grades 3-6. --Hazel Rochman
