This volume traces the development of private industrial railways in the South Lancashire areas of Bolton, Bury, Radcliffe, Clifton and Kearsley from the short horse worked tram roads of the early nineteenth century tour to the almost complete demise of rail hauled freight traffic in the 1990s. There are also chapters dealing with the firms in Bury and Bolton that built locomotives as well as a chapter on the growth and decline of canals and public railways serving the district.
